Get started

Sign in with Discord, pick a server and a plan, add the bot, and open your dashboard.

Setting up takes a few minutes. You need a Discord account that holds Manage Server on the server you want Colossus to watch.

Sign in with Discord

On the Colossus home page, press Continue with Discord. Discord asks to share who you are and which servers you are in. Colossus uses that list to show the servers you can set up. Signing in does not add anything to a server.

If you already run one Colossus server, you land on its dashboard. With none or several, you land on Your servers.

Pick a server

The server list, Pick a server, shows every server where your Discord account holds Manage Server. Press the server you want to set up.

If a server is missing, you do not hold Manage Server there. Get that permission, or sign in with the account that has it, then press Refresh the list.

Pick a plan

Pick a plan shows Free, Pro and Titan. The pricing page compares what each includes. You can change plans at any time.

Press Start free for Free, or Continue for a paid plan. Free and Pro use the shared Colossus bot. Titan runs a bot you own, under your name, which takes two extra steps: connect your own bot.

Add the bot to your server

Press Add to Discord. Discord opens in a new tab with your server already picked. Press Continue, then Authorize.

Discord asks for these permissions:

  • Administrator, so Colossus can read every channel, post level-ups and hand out level roles without asking again. You can untick it.
  • Manage Server, which lets Colossus read your invites and tell you who brought each member in.
  • View Channels and Read Message History, so it can see the activity it counts.
  • Manage Threads.

The last four are what Colossus cannot work without, so they stay even if you untick Administrator. Without Administrator, though, Colossus cannot post level-ups or hand out reward roles: if you use levelling, give the Colossus role Manage Roles, Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files and Use External Emojis in your server's Server Settings → Roles, and drag it above the roles it should hand out.

Leave the setup page open. It notices the bot joining and moves on by itself, so there is nothing to press.

Connect your own bot

On Titan, Colossus runs a Discord application you create, so the bot carries your name and your own rate limits.

  1. In the Discord developer portal, create an application, then press I've created it.
  2. On the application's Bot page, press Reset Token and copy what it shows. Paste it into Bot token and press Connect. Colossus stores the token encrypted and never shows it again.
  3. Under Privileged Gateway Intents on the same Bot page, switch on Server Members, Message Content and Presence. Press Check again, then Continue to install.
  4. Add your bot to the server from Discord, as in Add the bot to your server.

On a server with 10,000 members or more, Discord reviews a bot that uses those intents after it joins, and gives you 90 days to answer the review.

Pay for a paid plan

On a paid plan, press Continue to payment to check out. With the shared bot you can press Decide later and subscribe later from Plan & billing in Settings. Your own bot stays offline until its plan is paid for, then starts recording as soon as the payment clears.

Open your dashboard

Setting up shows while Colossus connects the bot, which usually takes under a minute.

On Pro and Titan, Import this server's message history is ticked for you. The import reads every channel, thread and forum post the bot can see, newest first, so your charts start from the server's past instead of today. It runs in the background, and you can stop it from Settings.

On plans that include a team, you can pick the roles or members who may open the dashboard too. You can change who has access later; see Give your team access.

Press Open the dashboard. You arrive on Home. Find your way around the dashboard explains the rest.

Levelling comes with every plan and starts off. Turn it on when you are ready, or move over from the levelling bot you use now first; see Levelling.

If something goes wrong

  • Sign-in was declined or expired. Start again from the home page. If you pressed Cancel on Discord, nothing was shared.
  • The server is already claimed by another team. Someone already runs Colossus there. Whoever runs that team can add you from its settings.
  • Setup failed. Press Retry on the setup page, or open the dashboard and pick it up from there.
