XP and levels
How members earn XP, the rules, multipliers and caps that shape it, the level curve, and what happens when you change them.
Earning XP, under Progression, holds everything that decides how fast members climb. It opens with Time to reach each level: how long each level takes your server's median active member, at the XP they earned a day last week under the rules on the page. Change a rule or the curve and the chart moves before you save, so you can see what the change does.
How XP is earned out of the box
Every server starts with two rules:
- Minutes with a message earn 6 XP each. A minute counts once however many messages a member sends in it, in however many channels, so flooding a channel earns no more than talking.
- Voice minutes earn 1 XP each while a member is speaking, self-muted or server-muted, and not alone in the channel. Deafened time does not count.
XP comes from the activity Colossus records for your charts, so channels, categories and roles you exclude from recording earn nothing, and members who opt out hold no XP.
Rules
How members earn lists the rules in the order they apply, each written as a sentence you change in place. Press New rule to add one:
- Earn XP from an activity: XP for each unit of a statistic, such as messages, words, replies, reactions given or received, voice, streaming or camera minutes, commands run, emoji sent, or minutes in an app. A rule can give a random amount between two numbers instead of a fixed one, drawn afresh for each member every hour, and can be capped at so much XP per hour, day or week. Voice rules choose which voice states count and whether time alone does.
- Multiply XP: multiply XP on chosen weekdays, at chosen hours, in chosen channels, for chosen roles, or between two dates, by anything from 0 to 100. Several multipliers that apply at once multiply together. Multiplier templates offers weekends ×2, evenings ×1.5 and this week ×2 to start from. Hours follow your server's time zone.
- Limit where XP counts: stop channels or categories earning, or earn only in some, for every rule or for one.
- Limit who earns XP: members with chosen roles earn nothing, or only they earn.
An earning rule or a multiplier can be switched off without deleting it. At least one earning rule always stays on.
On Free you keep the two rules above, or the pace of the bot you moved from, and can add multipliers. Writing your own rules and limits comes with Pro and Titan.
How many rules earn
Your plan sets how many switched-on rules earn XP, counting earning rules and multipliers together: 5 on Free, 20 on Pro, and no limit on Titan. The count shows at the top of the list. Rules past the limit stay as you set them, marked Not earning, and start earning again when you switch others off or upgrade.
The level curve
How levels add up sets how much XP in total each level takes. Every server starts on the default curve, and if you moved from another bot, its curve is offered here so levels stay where members had them.
On Pro and Titan, Curve templates offers more:
- The default curve, or the curve of MEE6, Arcane, Atlas, Kiai, Nadeko, Lurkr, Amari or Dyno, as each bot sets it out of the box.
- Your own formula: write the total XP for level L as a formula, such as
5L² + 50L + 100. - Table of levels: type the total XP for each level yourself.
You can also set a Highest level. Members who reach it either stay there, or start over at level 0 one prestige up. Each prestige climb can take a set percentage more XP than the last, up to a multiple of the first. Level reward roles are kept through prestige, and rewards can wait for a prestige.
When you change the rules or the curve
- The curve. Everyone keeps their XP, and their levels are worked out again on the new curve. If that moves anyone down, the save says how many go down and up first, and the reward roles above their new level go with it.
- How XP is earned. Everyone keeps the XP they have, and activity from then on earns under the new rules. On Titan, the save asks how the change should count: Apply from now on, or Recount from history, which counts everyone's past activity again under the new rules and moves levels and roles to match without announcing anything.
While Colossus works members' levels out again, a bar counts how many are left. Large servers take a few minutes.
Change one member's XP
On Pro and Titan, someone who may change levelling can open a member in Lens, go to Levelling and press Change XP to add, remove or set XP, with a reason. Levels reached this way are never announced, and the member's history lists every change.
