What Colossus records
What the bot reads, what it keeps and never keeps, how long data lasts, and the controls you and your members have.
Colossus counts activity in your server. It is built to measure how a community behaves without keeping what people say. The privacy policy is the full statement; this page is the short version for server admins.
What the bot needs from Discord
The bot asks for Administrator when you add it, which you can untick. It also asks by name for the four permissions it cannot work without: Manage Server, so it can read your invites and tell who brought each member in; View Channels and Read Message History, to see the activity it counts; and Manage Threads.
It also uses three privileged intents, each feeding different cards:
Colossus records only what the intents you have switched on allow.
What it records
- Messages: when and where each was sent, and what it carried, such as how many words, links, attachments, GIFs and emoji, and whom it mentioned or replied to.
- Reactions: who reacted, to whose message, with which emoji.
- Voice: time connected, and whether members were speaking, muted, streaming or on camera.
- Membership: joins, leaves, how members joined, roles and boosts.
- Scheduled events and threads.
- Moderation: how many messages were deleted in each channel, and which members were timed out or banned, when, and until when. Never who deleted, timed out or banned them, or why.
- Presence and apps: counts of who is online, and which apps members show on their profiles.
- Levelling, when it is on: each member's XP and level, worked out from the activity above, levels brought over from another bot or claimed by members, XP your team changed by hand and why, and pictures members upload for their own rank card.
What it never keeps
- Message text. The bot reads a message only long enough to count what it carried, then discards it. The text is never stored, so no dashboard can show it.
- Direct messages, anything from servers the bot is not in, the contents of attachments, and anything outside Discord.
- Annotation rules notice only that a message was posted, never what it says.
How long data lasts
You choose how long analytics are kept, from 90 days to everything, under Keep analytics for in Settings. Your plan decides how far back the charts show, which can be less than you keep. Some records last as long as the server stays in Colossus whatever the window, such as member names, roles, annotations and saved views.
If the bot leaves your server, its data is kept for 90 days in case you invite it back, then deleted. Deleting a server from Colossus removes its data within minutes. See the privacy policy for backups and the raw event record.
Controls you have
- Not recorded in Settings stops recording chosen channels, categories and roles, and can delete what was already recorded in a channel.
- Keep analytics for deletes older data.
- Delete this server removes everything.
Controls your members have
Any member can type /opt-out in Discord to be erased from Colossus for your server. That includes their levelling: their XP, their level, anything brought over from another bot for them and any changes made by hand, so they have no rank and earn nothing. Colossus keeps only a one-way fingerprint, so it knows not to count them again. /opt-in starts counting them again from then on; what was erased does not come back.
Tell your members your server uses Colossus, for example in your rules channel, and that /opt-out is there for them.
